Story

As soon as you step into the Hotel Accademia Verona, with its marble-panelled interiors and rooms decorated in red and gold, you know you're in a place with a long and storied history. Naturally, with this being Italy, much of its lore involves the most Italian of art forms - opera.

Academic Beginnings

The hotel's name derives from the fact that it was built on the site of the Accademia dei Filotimi, which was built in 1565 to educate young noblemen. In 1797 it was transformed into an inn, and later in 1880 it became the elegant Hotel Accademia Verona on the exclusive Via Mazzini that it remains as today.

Operatic Overtures

The next phase in the hotel's history involves a world-renowned tenor: the Veronese-born Giovanni Zenatello. Under his guidance, in 1913 the city's Arena assumed the role of the world's greatest open-air opera venue.

Zenatello acquired the hotel and it soon became 'the place' to stay for visiting operatic luminaries such as Maria Callas, who had met Zenatello in New York. We were honoured that she chose our hotel as her base in the city while performing masterworks such as Ponchielli's La Gioconda in the Arena in the 1940s.

The Verona Summer Opera Festival is a tradition that continues to this day, with some half a million opera lovers streaming into the city each year. The prime location of our hotel in Verona - that's just a few minutes walk from the Arena - the Hotel Accedemia is the hostelry of choice for discerning music buffs.
